On July 3, as I was leaving the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s European galleries after viewing the small exhibition on “The Torment of Saint Anthony,” believed to be Michelangelo’s first painting, a woman of about 40 said to her male companion (or perhaps to no one in particular): “Thirteen years old when he did that.
